ABSTRACT

The entries in this section mainly concern Hindu women from ancient times to the present. The ages covered are: Vedic, Epic, Moghul, British, and post-independence India. During the Vedic age the Indian woman enjoyed complete equality of status, but her position regressed considerably during the Epic and Moghul ages. The British period, however, brought some new thoughts and fresh ideals for Indian women, and changes introduced in that era raised their status. A sociological study reporting the socioeconomic situation of Indian women. The data from Bombay and Pune and some North Indian cities are interpreted. A short history of the women's movement and a review of legislation and important resolutions passed by the All-India Women's Conference and the Indian National Social Conferences are included in the appendices. During the Moghul period, the women lived in seclusion and avoided public appearances.
