ABSTRACT

India's working women do not have an enviable lot. They are subject to sexual discrimination, low and unequal wages, sexual exploitation, insecurity, etc. Certain areas are the exclusive preserve of men. There is sex-typing of occupations; women work as teachers, professors, clerks in factories and offices, nurses, etc. They also find a place in the field of medicine and in research laboratories. Uneducated women are involved in construction and agricultural activities. Many of them serve as domestic servants since very little help is available from male members of the family. Role conflict is a common malady from which most working women suffer. Automation also adversely affects female employment. Women need to supplement the low income of their husbands; and with the socioeconomic changes in society, women's representation in occupations of importance is increasing. These two hypotheses are tested in this survey with the help of research data and census information.
