ABSTRACT

This paper offers an overview, quite largely bibliographical, of the dictionaries, phraseologies, and wordlists of the learned languages which were compiled in seventeenth-century England, starting with Latin, and then turning to Greek; Hebrew; and Arabic and other learned languages of the Near and Middle East. R.C. Alston's Bibliography of the English Language is only cited below where its guidance through bibliographical complexities is particularly valuable, but it was indispensable in my work.
