THEAluearieorTripleDictionarieinEnglishe, Latin,andFrench(1573)ofJohnBaret(d. 1578?)hasbeenofinteresttoRenaissance scholarsforitsdefinitionsandetymologies,its useasaschooltext-book,anditscollaborative methodofcompilation.Onthislastaspect historiansoflexicographyhavedisagreed aboutwhetherornotBaretactuallyhadcollaborators,andifso,whotheywere.For example,DewittT.Stearns,inalengthyanalysisofthedictionary,concludesthat,while severalcontributorsmayhavepreparedthe work,Baret'sdescriptionofhisandhisstudents'collectiveeffortsmaynotbeaccurate. OntheotherhandTetsuroHayashi,accepting Baret'sowndescriptionofthisco-operative enterprise,citestheAluearieasthefirstexampleinEnglandofco-operative lexicography.1
