ABSTRACT

Inarecentarticle,MichaelLapidgehascautionedthescholarlyworldnotto assumetooreadilythatanyglossedmedievalmanuscriptwasnecessarilyused intheschoolroom.1Identicalglosses,hepointsout,oftenappearinseveral manuscripts,forcingustoconcludethatglosseswereeithercopiedalongwith thetextorfromacommentary.Theglossesnaturallyshowgreatervariety thanthetextsbecausethescribecouldatwillomitthem,changethem,oradd tothem.Nonetheless,thefactthatthesameglossesappearinseveral manuscriptsindicatesthattheywerenotthespontaneousreactionsofa teacherorstudent.
