ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the network of social aspects which shape the identities of the South Asian population in Britain. The identity structures of the children of South Asians are considered in relation to those of their parents, who came over to Britain in the 1950s and 1960s. This is achieved by describing the complex network of social processes that shape the identity of specific generations of South Asians in Britain. Changes between the generations both affect their expressive cultures in very important ways, and are major themes in the texts themselves.
