ABSTRACT

Mono-thematic names are discussed separately from di-thematic names due to the different problems that they pose. This is particularly obvious when the names do not clearly correspond to an Old English word. The problems are related both to the head-word, that is, the actual Old English nominative form of the name, given in 3.2.1 and 3.2.2 in normalised spelling, and also to the correspondences with Old English words. In the light of what follows, it is perhaps not surprising that Redin (1919) classifies so many mono-thematic names as 'Unintelligible'.
