ABSTRACT

The recovery of the true identity of Ōtomo-Nata Jezebel required a complex process. From the beginning to the end, the Jesuits depicted her in the darkened shadows of her famous ex-husband, Sōrin Francisco and the triumphant story of the Christianization of the Kingdom of Bungo. The detours behind the byōbu brought some light on her own portrait, obscured in the records. The first excursion into the history of Hachiman/Hibigami Shinto-Buddhism revealed her solid religious formation, which gave her an uncompromising self-identity as the daughter of Nata, high priestess of Hachiman, and prophetess for the Japanese nation.
