ABSTRACT

Women worked in publication culture in a variety of ways. They could contribute within a range of occupations, as scribes, illuminators, artists, stationers, papermakers, printers and publishers for example. How did women participate in the textual arts? Were there gendered restrictions on their participation in the world of the book? Did their experiences change at the introduction of the print medium? This chapter will explore not only how women worked in the book trades, but also what they wrote in texts about their experiences and employment opportunities in publication culture.
