What Is Good Research?
This chapter summarises the key points of a separate but related study undertaken specifically on the question of what is good research. Some people are increasingly concerned that the trend will affect the quality of research. Good qualitative research is consistent with the data, theoretically exciting, imaginative, and convincing. It is able to extend or develop or modify a theoretical notion that’s around in a literature. The Higher Education and Research Opportunities website offers guidance for new researchers and specifically addresses the importance of method: Good research practices are necessary if researchers are to produce professional and rigorous work. Professional researchers based in institutions may ‘use’ research to increase their standing and therefore their likelihood of gaining funding. Good research thus satisfies the objectives of many different people and sectors. The usefulness of research depends on the role of the person and what he or she perceives that role to be.
