ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses how changes in personal attributes, and changes in one's own employment status impact on older people's chances of experiencing income mobility. It summarises the choice of econometric models that can be used in identifying factors associated with income mobility. The chapter presents the results of the multivariate analysis using the binomial logit model as well as the multinomial and ordered logit model. It examines the impact of reliance on different sources of income during the post-retirement phase. From this empirical work, the chapter identifies snakes and ladders, viz. lifecourse events in old age and personal attributes that expose older people to income mobility. It offers both ordered and multinomial logistic modelling to identify covariates of income mobility outcomes. The chapter also analyses how changes in the marital status, in living arrangements and in employment status and a high reliance on different sources of pension income trigger income mobility in old age.
