ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights companies which have, in my opinion, excelled in their commitment to creating public good while being rooted firmly in the private, for-profit sector. They are Boots, Unilever, Serco, GSK and Ben & Jerry’s; to which I have added, in this edition, Natura, Adnams and Interserve. In the first edition of Welcome to GoodCo the list included Wates and Barrier Break Technologies. Whilst both deserve to stay on my list, in the interests of fairness, space and topicality I have replaced them. The construction company Wates has been widely recognised for its pro-community role by BITC and others and I featured it also in Partners for Good. Barrier Break Technologies is a small, Mumbai-based company with a world market for its website accessibility service, employing only people with disabilities. But my visit to them was in 2011 so my knowledge is no longer up to date.
