ABSTRACT
Language differences comprised an obstacle and a protective barrier. Living in a dangerous world, early modern Europe most wanted to safely manipulate the boundaries between peoples and between the mind and nature. Their attempts to cross or circumvent language barriers disclosed boundary features they rarely articulated explicitly, but strongly suggested spatial metaphors help disclose these features.
