ABSTRACT

The subject is mentioned by Kierkegaard in a number of his published works (including The Concept of Irony, Either/Or, Part One, Stages on Life’s Way, Concluding Unscientific Postscript, Two Ages, Works of Love, Christian Discourses, and The Sickness unto Death) and appears occasionally in his private papers and journals. More often than not, the topic of suicide is part of a thought experiment or theological investigation for Kierkegaard, rather than being a significant existential option for him personally. The thought of suicide, however, did cross his mind during the turmoil over Regine Olsen. A glimpse of this is offered in his journals.
