ABSTRACT

Kierkegaard uses the term “witness” extensively throughout his writing, mainly in the trivial sense of giving a sign or proof or of indicating a personal experience. Sometimes it is used metaphorically, for example, in the meaning of being aware of one’s own thoughts and feelings,5 or to describe the experience of conscience.6 There is also a conceptual use of the term dealing with epistemological and theological questions with regard to the historical relation between Jesus Christ and the present age.
