ABSTRACT

Aarsag comes from the Old Danish Orsagh and the later Orsaghe. Virkning is similar to the German Wirkung. Lexically, Aarsag carries philosophical meaning. A cause produces some necessary effect or consequence. A cause may also refer to an explanation or reason for something. A cause is not always the temporal origin of something or some event (for example, the turning of the key causing the car to start), or the source of some motion, but may also refer to the metaphysical origin or reason for something, like an ultimate or sufficient reason for why there is anything at all, and also why some things are not.1 The lexical meaning of Virkning is diverse. It ranges from personal and social actions and the impact of those actions to notions involving effects of causes in nature.2
