ABSTRACT

In this chapter we get to know three women’s organizations: two of them, in Ethiopia and Indonesia, are Muslim and one is run by people from the Bahá’í faith. Salient issues arising from the stories include the close link that the women see between rights and responsibilities and the role of men alongside the women in their struggle. In their view ‘development’ means getting rid not only of poverty but of injustice in all areas of society, the family included. We see the astuteness of the women but also their integrity as they wrestle to bring about the necessary cultural, institutional and political changes to achieve the justice they are looking for. With their focus on their faith not merely as a set of rules and their insights about the meaning of their scriptures, the Muslim women are helping to set in motion some deep and longlasting changes for the future.
