ABSTRACT

The stories collected here have been chosen as examples of the contribution spiritual insights and practice can make to the debate about what development consists of and ways in which it can be carried out. As all who have had anything to do with the subject will be very well aware, these examples in no way represent a cross-section of the very many faith-based organizations that are working on ‘development’ issues. There are many such organizations whose outlook and practice is very little different from that of secular NGOs, while others prioritize a religious agenda that can imply the manipulation of power, proselytism, exclusivity and/or attitudes leading to dependence and passivity. There are plenty of all sorts around!
