ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines how the Department of Environmental Affairs and the Department of City Planning of the city of Amsterdam are working together on new initiatives, with the aim of improving environmental quality through an integrated, district oriented policy. In 1994 the Amsterdam Departments of City Planning and Environmental Affairs have drawn up a policy document on urban planning and the environment in the city of Amsterdam. City planning can only begin to contribute structurally to the realisation of a liveable and sustainable city when starting points for environmental protection are integrated into city planning policy. The stolp method pursues an integrated approach, aimed at combining several fields of policy and consideration of several forms of environmental pollution, including the ways they are related. The city stolp survey will be an important step towards an integrated district oriented policy. The Environmental Exploration attempts to describe the quality of the environment in the broadest sense of the word.
