ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an introduction to the characteristics of traffic flow and the theories, models and statistical distributions used to describe many of the phenomena and processes that traffic engineers and analysts must consider. This field of knowledge is known as traffic science. The theory presented in the chapter is applied to individual links in a traffic network, and is concerned primarily with uninterrupted traffic flows, which are flows that are unaffected by external influences, such as other traffic streams.
