ABSTRACT
Shakespeare, the master at portraying human nature during England’s ascendance in world politics, saw several paths between ignorance and war. Certainly there was the problem also captured in today’s bargaining models: adversaries ignorant of the true extent of each other’s power or resolve could fail to find a mutually acceptable agreement. In The Merchant of Venice, the playwright’s allusion to music pointed toward a second connection.
