ABSTRACT

I think we need better cycle and pedestrian facilities but I think it would be very sad if the only way they could get the money for this is by charging motorists and personally I’m against charging. All I ever hear from drivers in Bristol is ‘If the public transport were different and would get me from A to B when I need to go from A to B, I would use it’. But they are saying it is so bad, they are not prepared to use it. (Female resident, Easton, an ethnically mixed district of Bristol)

Radial routes mean all cars and buses have to go through the city centre causing congestion. If everyone gets in a car and wants to park in the city centre, this also causes congestion. (Retired male resident, Southville, Bristol)

In the next two chapters on specific transport schemes in Bristol and Nottingham, we review the extent of ethnic consultation in the associated transport planning and give voice to ethnic concerns about operational issues connected with these schemes.
