ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the application of the transtheoretical model to drivers' willingness to reduce their car use, as measured during April 2000 and again in September 2000. It starts with brief summary of the pre-fuel crisis study undertaken in April and concludes with the September fuel crisis study. The fuel shortages during September 2000 provided the opportunity of following up the earlier questionnaire study to find out how drivers at different stages had been affected, and how they coped with any difficulties. In response to the question 'Were their travelling arrangements affected by fuel shortages', 67 participants circled 'Yes'. In response to the question 'Were they affected in other ways by fuel shortages', 45 participants circled 'Yes'. There were 32 participants who responded 'Yes' to whether they had changed their opinions about their own use of the car as a result of fuel shortages.
