ABSTRACT

European cultures are increasingly characterized by movement and hybridity due to population movements, among which tourism and migration play the major role. The impact of ICT expansion on movement has been profound, and movement, in turn, creates fluid local cultures. This web of interactions will be approached in this chapter from the vantage point of the cities, islands and coasts of Mediterranean Europe. It will be related to regional development indirectly, because our focus remains on the variety of cultures created by and spurring population movements, especially tourism, and their relationship with Mediterranean landscapes on the local rather than the regional scale.
