ABSTRACT
This chapter examines Ukrainian economic dependence on Russia and assesses its impact on Ukrainian alignment patterns towards Russia. The IT/ED framework suggests that the more economically dependent a country is on Russia, the more likely a pro-Russian alignment will be adopted. However, when leaders can mitigate or sever this dependence, they are less constrained in their relations towards Russia, allowing for a more independent alignment strategy.
