ABSTRACT

In the West, belief in life after death has gone out of fashion. For some, it has become fashionable to offer an account of faith that does not include life after death.1 For others, life after death, along with the rest of the religious edifice, is just implausible. Nursi would have recognized both of these challenges. Living at a time in Turkey when some saw Islam as a problem which needs to be overcome if Turkey is to be a progressive nation State, he was deeply concerned about the gap between faith and the modern, rational mindset. Therefore it is interesting to see how Nursi responds to the challenge of skepticism about life after death.
