ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter is the introduction of the primary levers and supporting enablers of engagement, which enable people to feel invited, safe and keen to challenge and contribute where they work, both for their own benefit and for the benefit of their institution. The core idea behind the primary levers and the enablers is that engagement is an outcome of well-governed involvement of people in decisions that affect them and which they themselves can affect. The primary levers are prerequisites for creating the conditions which will encourage people to engage themselves. The supporting enablers are important, but without the primary levers may not be relied upon as sufficient to create those conditions.
