ABSTRACT

Kokako; the Tui; Red-crowned Parakeet; South Island Saddleback; New Zealand Falcon and Yellowhead.

4 This probably refers to the plant to which the Forsters later gave the name Dichondra

repens in Characters Generum Plantantm (1776). This convolvulaceous herb is superficially similar to Falckia repens of the same plant family, which grows in South Africa. Linnaeus and Thunberg, who described the genus Falckia, probably had access to the plant sent to London. Forster had enjoyed close relations with his * particular friend' and botanical mentor, the former melancholy pupil of Linnaeus, Johan Peter Falk (1727-74), while in St Petersburg in 1765-6.
