Jan. f f <J The Officers got leave to go ashore & I went in the Pinnace & shot 4 Geese & a Duck. One Curlew of the kind Linnaeus calls Tantalus* was shot, which we drew & described next day. We returned very late on board.3 All boats were hoisted in. Next morning at 3 o'clock the Anchor was hove. At 4 o'clock we set sail, & came to the NE Extremity of Staaten Land & found that these Isles we were at are yet a good way off from the Cape of S* John & that Father Feuilli's.Map is quite wrong;4 his View of the South East side of Staaten-Land is tolerable. We met with sudden Gusts of Wind & Squalls & split some Sails. The Thermometer at 50°, in my Cabin 57°.
