ABSTRACT

Febr. f 5th Q The Breeze freshened & we go on at a fine Rate; white 8c blue Petrels are seen. We had some Snow. We are come to the last Cask of Sower-krout, the best preventative against the Scurvy. It is very remarkable, that the People in the Dolphin under Commodore Byron disliked both portable Soup & Sowerkrout, of which latter Eatable, they had but two Casks & they were brought back to England: Whereas we found the Sowerkrout so good, that we emptied about 60 Casks,1 &c 60 boxes of portable Soup, of 2 Canisters each at 25 Ib. Which clearly proves, how much prejudice can operate upon the minds of people? In the Endeavour but few would eat Sowerkrout, but as some of the Crew in the Endeavour came into the Resolution they set the Example to the Rest & all ate very heartily both portable Soup with Pease & Sowerkrout, to which latter we must ascribe the preservation of the Crew from the Scurvy, though we have been longer out at Sea, from any European Port or Settlement & Refreshments, than any other ship whatsoever. For which reason it deserves to be recommended to the Consideration of the Lords &: Gentlemen that are at the head of the Brittish Navy, whether it would not in future be useful to introduce the Sowerkrout Sc its use into the Navy. The Ship pitched very much. The Thermometer at 36°, in my Cabin 415°.
