June ye gth $ Altered the course at noon. Course West: in order not to miss the Isle of Fernando Noronha, which the Capt it seems will make, perhaps in order to get water & wood which latter we stand much in need of.1 These two last days the Cap1 ordered the Log not to be hove & set Foxton's new Patent-Log a going, but it goes much too short, so that we may with great certainty pronounce, this otherwise ingenious invention to be of little utility. For when the Worm or Log is driven into the whirlpools caused by the wake of the Ship it stops, which slakens the Log-Line &: the Machine is for that time at a stand, & then the Ship at last going forward the Stray-Line is stretched again & sets the Machine a going.2
