ABSTRACT

Forster's^and Cook's) intelligence on this island is probably one of the English editions of Ulloa's Voyage to South America which appeared in Spanish in 1748 and in English translation first in 1752. As a scientist, 'though not himself deep or exact in research' but withal 'one of the ornaments of the intellectual renaissance in the Spain of his day' (Beaglehole in Journals, o» 670, n. 2), Ulloa would certainly have been read and hence known by the elder Forster in some depth.
