ABSTRACT
There are 2 Nunneries in this Town. Near the Matriz Parish Church is that of the order of Sta Clara; their Church is dedicated to San Joao. It consists of about 140 or 150 Nuns & as many Servants. The Nuns wear white Callico-cloth below & a kind of brown Serge-Cloak over it, & white coeffes, that are very singular. The next to them in a lower Situation of the hill, are the Nuns of Nossa Senhora de Concep$ao, of which there are about 80 or 90 & as many Servants. These wear all white cloth & Cloaks, but on their breasts is fixed a blue silken orb with a silver plate — Image of Nossa Senhora.
