The Bibles printed in Antwerp by Martin Lempereur and Willem Vorsterman beginning in 1530 show ehe weiters of the various New Testament books composing [heir text wirh [he help of divine inspiration. This traditional representation is significantly altered in the case of Saint Matthew. Indeed, he does not weite by raking dictation {rom ODe of God's eovoys, bur he transcribes the text of an open book presented to hirn by an angeL I We have moved from dictation to transcription, from reception through heari ng to receprioD through sight. This engraving appears on the front cover of this work. By symbolizing the evolution towards a wodd where weitten communication is increasingly significant, it provides a perfect introduction to the theme of this resea rch.
