ABSTRACT

Our intention is not co define in detail the characteristics of the Italian Reformation. Suffice it to say that this coumry, which remained Catholic, had a different history as compared with other coumries with a Roman culture. Italy differed from Spain, where the civil and religious authorities blocked any attempt at religious innovation, and from France, where the Catholic majority could not ignore Huguenot power. The end of this chapter will show the particular significance of the concept of Reformation for the Italian context.
