ABSTRACT

The kingdom of Sweden became independent in 1521. The geo-political entity which then freed itself from Danish domination marched the Swedish ecclesiastica l province. The Archbishop of Uppsala oversaw seven dioceses: Uppsala, Linköping, Skara, Strängnäs, Västeräs, Växjö and in Finland, Turku. Indeed until the nineteenth century, Finland was pan of Sweden. The dates chosen for this chapter are those marking two significant events: the first Swedish work on the Reformation appeared in 1526, and the Ecclesiastical Ordinance which gave the Swedish Church its definitive structure was published in 1571.
