ABSTRACT

The manner of the return of the main actors from Peru was almost guaranteed to revive the tensions that had dogged every step of the southern expedition. Hugot the instrument-maker chose to stay on in Peru, where, though his talents were much in demand, he is said to have lived in near poverty and died early. After the in-fighting between La Condamine and Bouguer, it is a pleasure to turn to the handsome volumes which appeared in Spain from the pens of Jorge Juan and Antonio de Ulloa. Ulloa was put into the charge of Mr William Rickman, Commissioner for Spanish prisoners of war, who behaved with great kindness, while another Commissioner, Percy Brook, immediately wrote to the Duke of Bedford at the Admiralty about the expedition papers. Of all the survivors of the two expeditions Antonio de Ulloa can be said to have enjoyed the most adventurous aftermath, pursuing a notable career in the Spanish Navy and Diplomatic Service.
