ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the relationship between artistic creativity, movements in the arts and city development. The case of fine art is considered separately in a series of city case studies. Developing the cultural heritage of a city not only involves maintaining current support and plugging gaps, but also investing in new infrastructure. The city also home to many fashion, design and graphic design companies. Marketing of the city's arts facilities had been successfully conducted for several years by Arts About Manchester and this was developed further through an integrated marketing approach by the City Council and arts organizations. The role of Manchester-based organizations, in exploring the potential of the arts in the context of health care was acknowledged. Commercial applications of the arts and design have historically produced cycles of wealth creation. The popular arts of music and cinema provided several British Pop Artists with a recognizable set of images and an almost instant iconography.
