The Mercers’ Company enjoyed splendid success in the first five decades of the sixteenth century despite the expenses thrown at them by rapacious monarchs and religious change. No other company had so many mayors in office and the election feast of the company became a byword for elegant ceremony, with the lords and great men of the realm invited.
