The Defender: An Irish Tale of 1797 (1840) Upon an evening towards the close of the summer of 1797, a gentleman, advanced in years, and of a striking appearance, issued from a country town, in the east of Ireland, and sauntered along the pathway that led from it, by its river's edge, into the open country.
