ABSTRACT
Nomfundo Maka sells groceries from a small tuck-shop, referred to in South Africa as a ‘spaza’,1 from a room in her ‘shack’2 in Khayelitsha, a dormitory ‘town’ approximately 30 kilometres outside Cape Town. Her customers are her neighbours, who also live in the informal settlement.
