ABSTRACT

Hester Santlow’s daughter Harriot was probably born in February 1713.1 The exact date, and the place, of the baby’s birth have yet to be discovered. She was undoubtedly baptized, but the entry in the church’s parish register (if there ever was one) seems to have disappeared. The identity of the baby’s father was kept quiet, although it seems unlikely that his name could have remained a secret. He was James Craggs, an aspiring young diplomat and politician.
