In the table given below for psalms, the Wing figures are based on the years r660 to 1700, while the Treasurer's totals are based on four selected three-year periods (r663/4-65/6, r673/4-75/6, 1683/4-85/6, and 1693/4-95/ 6). Because the Company gave permission, at a price, to the King's Printers, and later to Oxford University's printers, to print their own impressions, particularly in small formats, these figures are lower than the number of books actually in circulation. But the point here is to compare those editions published between the years 1660 and nOO which Wing identifies as printed for the Stationers' Company with those recorded as passing through the Treasurer's hands. The significant point of comparison is therefore the overall proportions of psalms in different formats when set against those of extant editions recorded in Wing.
