ABSTRACT

However, such insights from the history of the book also point to the fact that there is no one universal history of the book. If there is no one universal history of the book it follows that there need be no single future for the book. If books have specific and contingent hist ories-as I hope I have demonstrated in the foregoing history of the Tamil book-it would follow that the new digital technologies will impact countries and cultures variously. The thrust of this epilogue is therefore to make a specific argument for the possible future of Tamil books and track how Tamil book publishing has fared in its engagement with digital technology.
