ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the nexus between events, sport and tourism by analysing how these three spheres, both separately and in interrelated fashion, have taken shape in South Africa. It investigates the trends around South Africa's involvement in sport mega-events and how these relate to the development of tourism in the country. The chapter provides a conceptual background to the newfound significance of sport and events in today's world. It reviews South Africa's experience in hosting or attempting to host a few major international sport events. The chapter investigates three recent sports or bidding events in which South Africa was involved: the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup, the 2003 Cricket World Cup, and the Presidents Cup 2003 and Golf Tourism Development. It discusses challenges and opportunities for event and sport tourism development in South Africa. The chapter explores some of the challenges South Africa faces in preparing for the event and the implications of inadequate or inappropriate planning and management.
