ABSTRACT

The Mineworkers’ Federation of Great Britain’s (MFGB) formal relationship with the Labour Party begins with the MFGB’s affiliation to Labour in 1908. For 10 years, this was a contested relationship. The mineworkers and Labour became synonymous because of the 1914-18 war, the franchise extension in 1918, Arthur Henderson’s reorganization of the party, and Labour’s 1918 constitution that put nationalization at the centre of Labour’s project.
