ABSTRACT

“In order to achieve sustainable development, environmental protection shall constitute an integral part of the development process and cannot be considered in isolation from it.” It would be foolish for all, even for white South Africans acting in their own self-interest, further to jeopardize environmental health, rather than to look first and resolutely to solving their social problems. But environmental ethics sees that the actions of individuals cumulate and produce larger scale changes that go on over the heads of these individuals. The 5 million new people in the industrial countries will put as much strain on the environment as the 85 million new poor. There are two major blocs, the G-7 nations, and the G-77 nations, once 77 but now including some 128 lesser developed nations, often south of the industrial north. Typically, where there is agricultural and industrial development, people think of this as an impressive achievement.
