ABSTRACT

One strand of ecocriticism in Britain, as it is emerging, is drawing fruitfully on Raymond Williams's work on socialism and ecology. Indeed, the interest in ecocriticism displayed by the Raymond Williams Memorial Trust Society may herald the arrival - or, at least, the stirrings - of a green cultural materialism: the second issue of the society's journal Key Words (1999) took ecocriticism as its principal theme, and produced some provocative formulations which might inspire new departures and cross-fertilizations.
