ABSTRACT

This paper sketches out some of the ways in which green Utopian fiction can contribute to debates about the sustainable society. The concept of sustainability, or sustainable development, has become central to contemporary constructions of the global environmental crisis, and as such it has important implications for the ways in which we think about the future. In particular, sustainability invokes a set of parameters which should guide future human social relationships with our natural environment.
