ABSTRACT
In conjunction with the meeting for which the papers in this volume were prepared, the European Association for Banking History mounted a remarkable book display. It presented what is possibly the most extensive collection ever assembled of institutional histories of central and commercial banks. That display reminded participants that their topic, the emergence of modern central banking, is hardly uncharted terrain. Virtually every important bank has its official history, and many are the subject of unauthorized biographies.
